Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby?

Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby was founded in January 2009 to fill a monstorous gap in the local culture of the beachside industrial city of Wollongong on the South Coast of NSW, Australia.

Making a derby legue from scratch, with no local rink, was mildly tricky, but Wollongong really wanted DERBY and we are rolling on towards our first bouts!

Roller derby is DIY - by the skaters, for the skaters - so use anything you need from here to kick your own league into action!

WIRD's First Photoshoot

I don't know if I have ever been as nervous as I was waiting on Flagstaff Hill for people to show up. Right up until hot girls started flooding up the hill I was absolutely convinced it would be me standing here all alone when the Mercury photographer turned up. I was fishnetted up, fully intending to strip down to my underpants in public and so frenetic that I could barely string a sentence.

The ladies of WIRD salute the local constabulary.

I threw enthusiasm around and convinced everyone to just have fun (while I freaked out a little more every second). I don't know if I will ever be able to put this much energy into anything ever again.

Multiple bridal parties chose today to have their weddings and we intruded on every single set of pics - mwah ha ha ha ha ha!

Feel a little bit dead but we got some damn hot pics!

Enter the Belmore/Victoria Sts carpark!

This is a brilliant skate, smooth, flat, lit at night. Myself and Donna hit the pavement and practiced 'the robot'!

Hopefully we'll get more skaters down here soon. Live in fear of no-one turning up. Get slighty hysterical before I leave the house. Alas.

Second WIRD skate

After missing WIRD's first skatey get together last Sunday (due to ridiculous work commitments) I was eager to get out there and have a go! Five of us turned up to the carpark out the back of ****. Took some sweeping and bits of it were down/up hill. Not too bad.

Apparently roller skating is not something that comes naturally, and the human body is not designed to move in these ways. I need a LOT of practice!
